The novel begins in Ireland in the mid-19th century, as the country is ravaged by famine. Patrick O'Connor, a young farmer, is forced to leave his home and family behind in search of a better life in America. He arrives in New York City with nothing but the clothes on his back, but he is determined to make a new start.
Patrick finds work as a laborer on the Erie Canal, and he eventually saves enough money to send for his wife and children. They settle in a small town in upstate New York, where they raise a family and build a new life for themselves.
Patrick's son, Michael, grows up to be a successful businessman. He marries a wealthy American woman, and they have two children of their own. However, Michael's life is shattered by the outbreak of the Civil War. He enlists in the Union Army, and he is killed in battle.
Michael's wife, Mary, is left to raise their two children on her own. She struggles to make ends meet, but she is determined to give her children a good life. She works as a seamstress, and she eventually opens her own dress shop.
Mary's daughter, Kathleen, grows up to be a strong and independent woman. She becomes a teacher, and she fights for the rights of women and workers. She is also a talented writer, and she publishes several novels.
World Gone By is a powerful and moving novel that tells the story of the Irish immigrant experience in America. The novel is a testament to the strength and resilience of the human spirit, and it is a reminder of the importance of family and community.
