Whatley was born in South Africa during the apartheid era, a time of racial segregation and oppression. He grew up in a white, privileged family, and his early experiences were marked by fear and ignorance of the black majority. However, as he grew older, he began to question the injustices of the system and to feel a sense of guilt and shame at his own complicity in it.
After completing his studies, Whatley left South Africa and travelled the world. He spent time in Europe, Asia, and the Americas, and his experiences abroad helped him to see his own country in a new light. He began to understand the arrogance and racism that had shaped South Africa's history, and he became determined to play a role in changing it.
Upon his return to South Africa, Whatley joined the anti-apartheid movement. He worked with black activists to fight for freedom and equality, and he risked his own life in the struggle. He was arrested and imprisoned several times, and he was subjected to torture and abuse. But he never gave up hope, and he continued to fight for what he believed in.
After the end of apartheid, Whatley continued to work for social justice in South Africa. He helped to establish the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which investigated the crimes of the apartheid era. He also worked to promote education and economic development in disadvantaged communities.
To My Country is a profoundly personal and moving account of Whatley's journey. It is a story of love and loss, of guilt and redemption, and of the power of hope. It is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the complexities of South Africa's past and present, and for anyone who believes in the power of human compassion.
