The story of "Das Rheingold" begins at the bottom of the Rhine River, where three Rhinemaidens—Woglinde, Wellgunde, and Flosshilde—joyously play and guard a vast treasure of gold. The tranquility of their underwater kingdom is shattered when the mischievous dwarf Alberich, consumed by greed, steals the gold and forges it into a magical ring that grants him unimaginable power.
