History

Early years

Southdown Buses was founded in 1910 by Thomas Tilling. The company's first buses were horse-drawn, but it soon converted to motor buses. Southdown Buses expanded rapidly in the 1920s and 1930s, acquiring a number of smaller bus companies. By the outbreak of World War II, Southdown Buses was one of the largest bus operators in the United Kingdom.

Nationalisation
