Potteries Motor Traction (PMT) is one of the largest bus and coach operators in the United Kingdom. The company has a long and rich history, dating back to the early days of motor transport. This book provides a comprehensive account of PMT's history, from its beginnings to its present day operations.

Early History

PMT was founded in 1914 by a group of local businessmen in Stoke-on-Trent. The company's first buses were horse-drawn, but it soon began to acquire motor vehicles. In the early years, PMT operated a variety of services, including local bus routes, long-distance coach services, and private hire.

Expansion

In the 1920s and 1930s, PMT expanded rapidly. The company acquired a number of smaller bus operators and began to operate services in new areas. By the end of the 1930s, PMT was one of the largest bus operators in the Midlands.

World War II

During World War II, PMT played a vital role in the war effort. The company's buses were used to transport troops and supplies, and its workshops were used to repair military vehicles. PMT also operated a number of ambulance services.

Post-War

After the war, PMT continued to expand. The company acquired a number of new bus operators and began to operate services in new areas. In the 1960s, PMT became one of the first bus operators in the UK to introduce one-person operated buses.

Nationalisation

In 1969, PMT was nationalised along with the rest of the bus industry in the UK. The company became part of the National Bus Company (NBC). Under NBC ownership, PMT continued to operate a successful bus and coach network.

Privatisation

In 1986, PMT was privatised along with the rest of the NBC. The company was bought by a group of management and employees. Since privatisation, PMT has continued to grow and expand. The company now operates a fleet of over 1,000 buses and coaches.

Present Day

Today, PMT is one of the largest bus and coach operators in the UK. The company operates a wide range of services, including local bus routes, long-distance coach services, and private hire. PMT is also a major player in the school bus market.
