Milton Acorn was one of the most important and influential Canadian poets of the twentieth century. His work is characterized by its powerful imagery, its deep love of nature, and its commitment to social justice. The Poet's Life
Milton Acorn was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, in 1923. He grew up in poverty and left school at a young age to work in the shipyards. He began writing poetry in his early twenties, and his first collection, The Brain's the Pink, was published in 1958. Over the next four decades, he published more than twenty collections of poetry, as well as several plays and novels.
Acorn was a political activist throughout his life. He was a member of the Communist Party of Canada, and his work often reflects his commitment to social justice. He was also a strong advocate for the rights of Indigenous peoples.
Acorn died in 1986 at the age of 62. He is buried in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.
