  • Eastern Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina)
  • Three-Toed Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina triunguis)
  • Ornate Box Turtle (Terrapene ornata)

Each species has unique characteristics, such as size, geographic range, and dietary preferences. Research each species thoroughly before making a decision.

Enclosure Setup

The enclosure should be spacious enough to allow your turtle to move freely, providing ample space for exploration and exercise.

  • Size: A minimum enclosure size of 4' x 2' x 2' (1.2m x 0.6m x 0.6m) is recommended for adult turtles.
  • Substrate: Use a safe, absorbent substrate such as cypress mulch, coconut fiber, or shredded bark.
  • Hiding Places: Provide multiple hiding places for your turtle to feel secure, such as a turtle cave, log, or pile of leaves.
  • Basking Area: Create a basking area with a heat lamp and a ramp or rock for your turtle to climb.
  • Water Dish: Provide a shallow water dish large enough for your turtle to soak in.

Temperature and Lighting

Box turtles are ectothermic, meaning they rely on external sources to regulate their body temperature.

  • Temperature Gradient: Create a temperature gradient within the enclosure, ranging from 75-85°F (24-29°C) on the basking side to 70-75°F (21-24°C) on the cooler side.
  • Basking Temperature: The basking area should be 90-95°F (32-35°C).
  • UVB Lighting: Provide your turtle with access to UVB (ultraviolet B) lighting for proper calcium metabolism.

Diet and Nutrition

Box turtles are omnivores, eating a variety of plant matter, insects, and small animals.

  • Vegetables: Offer dark leafy greens such as romaine lettuce, collard greens, and dandelion greens.
  • Fruits: Provide occasional fruits as treats, such as strawberries, blueberries, and apples.
  • Protein: Feed your turtle live insects, such as crickets, worms, and snails. You can also offer cooked lean protein sources like chicken or turkey.
  • Supplements: Provide calcium and vitamin D3 supplements to ensure proper nutrition.

Health and Veterinary Care

Regular veterinary checkups are essential for maintaining your turtle's health.

  • Shell Health: Check your turtle's shell for any signs of damage, such as cracks or peeling.
  • Eyes and Nose: Examine your turtle's eyes and nose for any discharge or swelling.
  • Respiratory Health: Listen for any wheezing or crackling sounds that may indicate respiratory problems.
  • Veterinary Expertise: Consult with a veterinarian experienced in reptile care for any health concerns or emergencies.

Hibernation

Box turtles brumate (hibernate) during the winter months.

  • Preparation: Gradually decrease food and temperature in the fall.
  • Hibernation Box: Provide a hibernation box filled with moist substrate, such as sphagnum moss.
  • Temperature and Monitoring: Keep the hibernation box in a cool, dark place, monitoring the temperature to ensure it stays between 40-50°F (4-10°C).

With proper care, box turtles can live long and healthy lives as beloved pets. By providing a suitable enclosure, maintaining optimal temperature and lighting, offering a balanced diet, ensuring good health practices, and understanding hibernation needs, you can create a thriving environment for your box turtle. Remember, their well-being is your responsibility, and a happy, healthy turtle brings endless joy to its owner.
